Showing up to Pray - Shannon Stiff

Early on a Thursday morning, I began to feel bad with a terrible headache, nausea and my  vision became blurred. I endured the symptoms for two days before deciding to go to urgent  care for some relief. The doctor there seemed perplexed and prescribed an antibiotic deciding  that it may be an inner ear infection. He advised me to see my primary care doctor on Monday.  On Monday, my doctor sent me to an ophthalmologist to determine the cause of my blurred  vision. The eye doctor told me the dreaded words that I never thought I would hear. He said I  had a stroke.

Faith in Prayer - Jessica Smallwood

His name is Joseph. I first saw him walking through our quaint downtown square with a bundle of blankets tucked under his arm . He was obviously malnourished. His hair and beard  were unkempt and his skin bore the marks of weathering both the physical and spiritual storms of life. In my mind’s eye I immediately saw him as someone’s son, someone’s brother, perhaps, someone’s husband or father. My heart hurt for him. It was a short and simple prayer that I prayed that day, “Lord, show me how I could help someone like that.” The light turned green and I drove on.

ISO: Answered Prayer - Sandy Domelle

Have you ever noticed that sometimes we get so consumed with our own wants and needs? This leads to praying endlessly all day because we want an answer immediately, and then we start to get upset, mad, and bitter when we don’t get a response. It feels like our prayers are hitting the ceiling and bouncing back to us. What happens next is that you’ve become so frustrated about what you are praying for that you begin arguing with the Lord. You want to wrestle with Him so that you can win. Is it wrong to be passionate about your prayer life? No, but there are often times when you try to force your way and even manipulate your answer, and then you live in misery and regret because you had to have what you wanted.

Trust in the Lord - Barbara Mock

A few months ago I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease. The diagnosis came as a surprise as no one in our family ever had it. Although not life-threatening, the disease is and will continue to be life-altering. The “what about? what abouts?”set in. I have given my condition to God for whatever He wants to do with me. My doctor referred to my Parkinson’s diagnosis as “later in life onset.” In fact, the day this article is due to come out, September 5, is my 75th birthday. Therefore, I may not live long enough for the symptoms to get real bad. So, instead of saying”why me?” I say “why not me?” I am not a young mother with small children. Of the many side effects of my medicine is a desire to spend money! So, now I can blame it on the pill.

The Numbing Process - Denise Roe

According to tradition, when an Eskimo hunts a wolf, the first thing he does is coat his knife blade with animal blood and allows it to freeze. Then he adds layer after layer of blood. He then puts his knife in the ground with the blade up. The wolf follows his nose to the source of the scent and begins licking it, tasting the fresh frozen blood. He begins to lick faster, more vigorously until the edge is bare. Harder and harder the wolf licks the blade. His craving for blood becomes so great that he doesn’t notice the razor sharp sting of the naked blade on his own tongue. Nor does he recognize when his insatiable thirst is being satisfied by his own warm blood. His tongue has become desensitized. His appetite continues to crave more until in the morning light the wolf is found dead in the snow.

Trust in the Lord - Robin Petty

For a few days, God tried to get me to rest and He tried to give me peace, but I didn't want to accept it. I was heartbroken, angry and I just plain didn't understand what He was doing and why??? Hadn't I prayed almost constantly, plus fasted? Had I not asked many others to pray along with us for the situation? But it still didn't work out the way I wanted it to. To be honest, I still don't understand why things happened the way they did, but I do know there have been some lessons He wants me to learn through this.

Tiny Puppy - Jacqueline Palmani

When my son Jack was 3 yrs old and my daughter Katelynn was 4 yrs old , I really started wanting a tiny breed dog.( That's why I didn't pray for it, because it wasn't anything spiritual or life or death..just a dog) For couple months, my kids picked up on my desire to have a tiny dog. When we had our family devotion and prayer time, we knelt beside our couch, and my kids started praying for their mommy to get a tiny dog. I got tickled that my kids started praying for a tiny dog for ME! We did teach our kids to pray even for the smallest things. Of course, I was thinking if I save enough money, then I'll be ready to buy a tiny dog.

I Can't - Kristy Miller

One of my biggest struggles was when I was a senior in high school. I had the privilege of being born into a Christian home, went to a great church my entire life and had wonderful Christian parents, preachers, and teachers that taught me the Bible and how God wanted me to live. In spite of church 4 times a week, Christian education, chapel services, family devotion, etc., I still wasn't really sold out on this whole living for Jesus thing. I had watched several people graduate from our Christian school and immediately begin doing the complete opposite of what we had been taught our entire lives.

Preparing Your Spirit - Kim McCoy

Preparing our spirit is a daily task. It’s just as important or even more important than preparing for our physical needs each day. We must be prepared both physically and spiritually to meet the pressures and demands that we face each day.

As Christians we know that this is true, and I’m sure that probably most, if not all that are reading this devotion, already practice this daily. Sometimes we need a little reminder, like I did, about a month ago when I came across this verse in Romans.

Seeing the Need to Intercede - Charlotte Cooper

Do we have this compassion like Jesus did? We need to have this compassion that takes this thought and then drives us to our knees! There are lost souls we pass by everyday! Lost souls!!! Are we going to our prayer closets ,praying that we might have the power, wisdom, truth, and opportunities to share the good news with others? If we do not have the mind of Christ we will pass by those that truly need the gospel. With the blood of Jesus, He looks past our financial standing, our looks, our failures and just sees lost souls in need of a Saviour.
