Shining, Smiling, Serving ~ Amy Sapp

1 Corinthians 15:58

“Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.”

I love how Paul starts this verse.

“Therefore, my beloved…”

He’s not scolding.

He’s not preaching at them.

He’s speaking to people he loves.

And then he gives a challenge that feels just as real today as it did then:

Be steadfast.

Be unmoveable.

Always abounding.

Not sometimes.

Not when it’s convenient.

Not when life is easy.

Always.

Now let’s be honest being steadfast sounds Sappsolutely wonderful…

Until life hits.

Because it’s easy to shine when things are going well.

It’s easy to smile when everything’s going our way.

And it’s easy to serve when we feel appreciated.

But Paul says our labor is not in vain.. even when it feels unseen, unnoticed, and unappreciated.

We are going to talk about living out this verse through three very practical, very visible ways:

* Shining

* Smiling

* Serving

~ SHINING — STEADFAST IN OUR FAITH

1. Shining Doesn’t Mean Life Is Easy

Shining doesn’t mean you have a perfect life.

It means you reflect Christ EVEN when life is hard.

Stars don’t shine because it’s bright outside... they shine because it’s dark.

And sometimes, God allows dark seasons not to dim us…

But to make His light more visible THROUGH us.

* Think about a flashlight.

It doesn’t look impressive sitting in a drawer.

But when the power goes out, suddenly it matters.

You don’t realize how much your faith shines until someone around you is walking in darkness.

Your consistency.

Your peace.

Your quiet trust in God.

That’s shining.

Learning to Shine Without the Spotlight

Let me share something personal.

I got saved when I was 17 years old, and when I first started growing in the Lord, I honestly thought that being a good Christian meant doing everything right.

I wanted to be faithful.

I wanted to be consistent.

I wanted to shine for the Lord.

But what I didn’t realize back then is that some of the greatest growth doesn’t happen on the mountaintops.. it happens in the valleys.

There were seasons when I was tired.

Seasons when ministry felt heavy.

Seasons when I wondered if what I was doing even mattered.

Looking back, I can see it now.

God was teaching me how to shine without needing recognition.

How to be steadfast even when no one was clapping.

How to stay faithful when it would’ve been easier to step back.

THOSE seasons shaped me far more than the easy ones ever could.

2. Shining Requires Being Unmoveable

Paul says:

“Be ye stedfast, unmoveable…”

That means:

Not quitting when you’re tired

Not changing convictions when culture shifts

Not dimming your light to make others comfortable

Shining requires stability.

A flickering light doesn’t help anyone.

~ SMILING — JOY THAT REMAINS

Now let’s talk about smiling... and no, I don’t mean pretending everything is fine

1. Smiling Is a Choice, NOT a Circumstance

Joy is not based on what’s happening around us.

Joy is based on WHO lives within us.

You can love Jesus and still have bad days.

You can be faithful and still feel exhausted.

You can be joyful and still need a nap.

Smiling doesn’t mean fake happiness.

It means confidence that God is still good.

The Walmart Smile

Let’s be honest.. how many of us have practiced the “church smile”?

You know the one...

You walk in and say,

“Hi! I’m doing GREAT!”

And inside you’re thinking, “If one more thing happens today…”

But real joy isn’t performing.

It’s peaceful.

It’s the smile that says,

“I trust God... EVEN here.”

2. Our Smiling Is a Testimony

People may never read their Bible…

But they will READ your face.

A bitter spirit dims our light.

But a joyful spirit draws people in.

Nehemiah 8:10 says:

“The joy of the Lord is your strength.”

Joy doesn’t mean the absence of hardship.

It means the presence of hope.

~ SERVING — ALWAYS ABOUNDING

Paul finishes strong with:

“Always abounding in the work of the Lord…”

1. Serving Is Not Seasonal

Serving isn’t something we do when life slows down.

Let me say this gently…

Life does not slow down.

If we wait for the perfect season, we’ll never serve.

God is not looking for perfect people.

He’s looking for available people.

The Apron, Not the Applause

Serving often looks like:

Doing the job no one wants

Loving people who don’t say thank you

Showing up when you’re tired

An apron rarely gets applause.. but Heaven notices every stitch.

Galatians 6:9 reminds us:

“Be not weary in well doing…”

2. Your Labor Is NOT in Vain

This is the heart of the verse.

God sees:

The prayers no one hears

The sacrifices no one notices

The faithfulness no one applauds

Nothing done for Him is wasted.

Your labor may feel invisible on earth…

But it is VERY visible in Heaven!

Paul didn’t say:

“Be flashy.”

“Be famous.”

“Be flawless.”

He said:

Be steadfast.

Be unmoveable.

Always abounding.

So let me ask you:

Are you shining, even when life is hard?

Are you smiling, trusting God instead of circumstances?

Are you serving, even when it feels unnoticed?

Because here’s the promise:

“Your labour is not in vain in the Lord.”

So don’t quit!

Don’t dim your light!

Don’t lose your joy!

Keep shining.

Keep smiling.

Keep serving.

Because God is using it all... far more than you realize.
