Is God's Good, Good Enough? ~ Amy Sapp

Genesis 1:31

“And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good.”

Have you ever noticed how often we say the word good… but still feel unsatisfied?

“It’s good… but it could be better.”

“I’m thankful… but I still wish…”

“God has been good… but why does this still hurt?”

I want to ask a question that may sound simple…

but it reaches into the deepest corners of our hearts.

Is God’s good… good enough?

Genesis 1:31 tells us that when God finished creating everything — the sky, the sea, the stars, the animals, and mankind — He stepped back, looked at it all, and said,

“Behold, it was very good.”

Not acceptable.

Not almost right.

Very good.

But if we’re honest…

many of us would say, “God, I know You’re good… but this doesn’t feel good.”

And that tension is where many Christian's quietly live.

~ GOD DEFINES “GOOD,” NOT US

When God said creation was very good, nothing was missing.

Nothing was broken.

Nothing needed fixing.

God’s definition of good wasn’t based on convenience, comfort, or control.

It was based on His perfect will.

But somewhere along the way, we started redefining “good.”

We say or think....

Good means no heartbreak

Good means prayers answered quickly

Good means healthy children, stable marriages, predictable days

And when life doesn’t look like that… we quietly wonder if God missed something.

The problem is not that God stopped being good.

The problem is that we started expecting good to look like easy.

Think about it:

Joseph was sold by his brothers… but God called it good.

Ruth lost her husband… but God was writing a redemption story.

Mary watched her Son die… and Heaven was accomplishing salvation.

God’s very good often includes pain we wouldn’t have chosen.

~ WHEN “GOOD” DOESN’T FEEL GOOD

There are seasons when we smile in church…

BUT cry in the car.

Seasons where we say “God is good”

while holding grief, disappointment, unanswered prayers, or exhaustion.

Some of you are carrying things no one knows:

Maybe...

A prodigal child

A broken marriage

A diagnosis

Loneliness

A prayer you’ve begged God to answer

And if we’re honest, we don’t doubt God’s goodness out loud —

we just quietly ask,

“Lord… is this really good?”

Here’s the truth we struggle with...

God’s goodness is not proven by our circumstances.

It’s proven by HIS character.

Genesis 1:31 doesn’t say creation felt good.

It says God saw that it was good.

God sees what we cannot see.

Some of God’s greatest works are happening in places that still ache.

Some of His best shaping is happening in seasons we wish away.

~ THE TEMPTATION TO ADD TO GOD’S “GOOD”

In the Garden of Eden, everything was very good…

until Eve believed a lie.

Satan didn’t tell her God wasn’t good.

He just suggested God was holding something back.

“Did God really say…?”

“You’d be happier if you had more…”

“God’s good isn’t enough…”

And we still fall for that lie today.

We say things like:

God is good… but I need control.

God is good… but I need reassurance.

God is good… but I want it my way.

The moment we try to improve God’s plan,

we step outside His peace.

God’s good doesn’t need upgrades.

It doesn’t need edits.

It doesn’t need our approval.

~ TRUSTING GOD WHEN WE DON’T UNDERSTAND

Trust is not saying,

“God, this makes sense.”

Trust is saying,

“God, You make sense — even when this doesn’t.”

Genesis 1:31 reminds us:

The God who created order out of chaos

can still bring beauty out of brokenness.

Some of us are living in the MIDDLE of the story —

not the beginning and not the redemption yet.

And the middle is hard.

But just because God hasn’t finished

doesn’t mean He’s failed.

Can you trust God’s heart when you don’t understand His hand?

Can you believe His very good even while you wait?

~ WHEN GOD’S “GOOD” SAVED US

The greatest proof of God’s goodness is not creation…

it’s the cross.

Because the cross didn’t look good.

It felt cruel.

It felt unfair.

It felt unbearable.

And yet…

“For the joy that was set before him, endured the cross.” (Hebrews 12:2)

What looked like loss was actually love.

What looked like defeat was victory.

What looked like death was life.

If God’s goodness was good enough to save our souls…

it is good enough to sustain our lives.

Let me ask you the same question —

but with a different heart.

Is God’s good, good enough?

Not:

When life is easy

When prayers are answered

When things go our way

But:

When you don’t understand

When you’re still waiting

When your heart hurts

Genesis 1:31 says God saw that it was very good.

Today... God sees you.

He sees your faith.

He sees your tears.

He sees what He is still working on.

And one day, we will look back and say,

“Lord… You were good all along.”
