Digging Wells for the Next Generation - Amy Sapp
Psalm 84:5-7
“Blessed is the man whose strength is in thee; in whose heart are the ways of them. Who passing through the valley of Baca make it a well; the rain also filleth the pools. They go from strength to strength, every one of them in Zion appeareth before God.”
Psalm 84 is a psalm of longing for God and the blessings that come from dwelling in His house. We find making wells in dry places within these verses—for us to create resources not just for ourselves, but for those coming behind us. Let’s talk about how we can live in such a way that we leave spiritual “wells” for others.
1. The Valley of Baca: A Place of Challenge
~ The “Valley of Baca” represents a dry, barren, and challenging place.
~ In life, we all face seasons of struggle—maybe grief, discouragement, or trials.
~ However, those who trust God see these valleys as opportunities to create something meaningful.
What “valleys” are you facing in your life? Are you using them as opportunities to build faith and trust in God?
2. Making Wells: A Legacy of Faith
~ The psalmist says, “Who passing through the valley of Baca make it a well.”
~ This means on purpose and with effort.
~ A well is a source of refreshment; it sustains not only you but others who come after you.
What kind of well have you built for the next generation?
~ Spiritually, digging wells means:
* Building a prayer life.
* Sharing your testimony.
* Creating opportunities where others can know God.
Isaac in Genesis 26 re-dug the wells of his father Abraham and also dug new wells, making sure his family and community had water. This act shows the importance of both preserving the old and creating the new.
3. God’s Provision: The Rain Filleth the Pools
~ When we dig wells in faith, God brings the rain.
~ This represents His blessing and provision.
~ Our responsibility is to prepare the space; God will fill it.
~ Isaiah 41:18: “I will open rivers in high places, and fountains in the midst of the valleys.”
* Are you making room in your life for God to pour out His blessings?
* Wells require patience, labor, and faith, but God promises to show up.
4. Going from Strength to Strength
~ The psalmist describes a journey of spiritual growth: “They go from strength to strength.”
~ Each well you dig, each prayer you pray, each step of faith you take strengthens you and prepares the way for others.
~ Those who follow you—your children, friends, or people that look up to you —will benefit from the spiritual foundation you build.
Every act of faith, no matter how small, is passed down!
5. Practical Steps for Digging Wells
~ Seek God Daily: Make your personal relationship with God your priority.
~ Invest in Others: Teach, train, and encourage others in their walk with the Lord..
~ Persevere in Trials: Turn your valleys into testimonies of God’s faithfulness.
~ Live Generously: Share your time, resources, and spiritual wisdom to help others.
Psalm 84 reminds us that our lives are not just about reaching Heaven, but about creating wells along the way for others to drink from. Let us commit to being well-diggers—leaving behind a legacy of faith, prayer, and godliness for generations to come!
What kind of wells are you digging? Are you filling them with clean or septic water for others to come and drink from?
